USANA: Sugars in the Nutritional Bars

Here’s a reply we received from Usana Science Information Services concerning the sugars used in our bars and shakes, should others receive inquiries. Deanna Waters, Diamond Director, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

We appreciate your inquiry. I'm sure they thought they were being helpful with all the sugar information, but it was definitely not necessary. We also understand very well the benefits and issues with fructose as a sweetener. It is the primary sweetener in the drink mixes. Bars are a little different than dry mixes, however, so what works in one doesn't always work in the other. The syrups - maltitol syrup, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, etc., work much better in a bar that you want to maintain as moist as possible. Either way, they could have saved a lot of work in researching this had they simply looked at the Glycemic Index numbers on the side of the product boxes, labels, etc.
The following statement is true: "When sugar is coupled with high fiber, it enters the blood stream slower. The bar only has 2g of fiber. Consuming carbohydrates along with other foods (especially those high in fiber) could change the rate of absorption of the sugar." However, this statement was intended to imply that our bar would be high glycemic (due to a low fiber level). It is not high, of course, but very low at 26 which is lower than that of kidney beans or lentils. Although fiber influences the GI, protein and fat also have a very strong influence on the rate of digestion. It is the entire combination of macronutrients and how they are combined that keep the GI of the Peanut Butter Crunch bar (and other macro-optimizers) so low.
I have used an apple to explain the sugar content of the Nutrimeals. A small 3 oz apple has approximately 23 grams of carbohydrates, with more than half as simple sugars. The Oatmeal Raisin bar would provide similar total carbs, sugar and fiber as a typical apple. Unlike the apple, however, it has 10 times more protein and a little healthy fat. The Peanut Butter Crunch and Lemon Bar have less carbs and sugar than a typical apple.
I hope this is helpful.
Best Regards,

USANA: Commitment

This is part six in our series of seven things that will make a difference for your Network Marketing success. These seven things are what top leaders do to build a large group. The most successful ones use all of them. Some use them consciously, many use these things well subconsciously and aren't even aware they do.

These seven things aren't really skills. Some are habits. Some are the right mindset. And some are techniques. But they all are things that you must use effectively to build a large business.

So let's look at number six:

COMMITMENT

Well that sounds easy doesn't it? I mean everybody is committed, right?

Hardly.

The vast majority of the people in the business enter it with a provisional commitment at best. They say things like, "I'll give this a try."

They have a commitment to success - provided that commitment doesn't inconvenience them, interfere with their comfort zone routine, or conflict with their favorite TV shows.

Commitment is like principle. You don't really know you have it until you're tested.

Going to the weekly opportunity meetings every time until the American Idol final is not committed. Going to the major functions except when you're getting ready to move is not committed. Working the business 10 to 15 hours every week until your in-laws come to town is not committed.

Those things are the appearance of commitment, and doing them gives you the feeling you are committed. But you're really lying to yourself. Commitment is not jogging every day except when it is raining. Commitment means you get wet, or you move to the fire escape stairway.

A lot of times you hear people say, "Treat this like a business." Recently I heard something better: "Treat this like a job."

People are committed to jobs, because otherwise they get passed up for promotions, miss raises, or get fired. You don't miss work when the American Idol final is on, you move, or your in-laws come to town. Your business should be the same way.

That's the commitment we're talking about.

Here are the two most important commitments I believe we need to make in the business:

First to work the business 10 to 15 hours a week because that's what it takes to do this successfully. You can't do it with or six. You need at least ten. So you must commit to that.

But how many people actually do this? And more importantly, do you?

Watching the company video four more times during the week is not doing the business. Scrolling through the company website looking at the profiles is not doing the business. And
organizing your briefcase isn't either.

Doing the business is actively prospecting and presenting. Or helping someone on your team to actively prospect or present. Those are the "rainmaker" activities that spur growth and produce income. So you want to devote as many of your 10 to 15 hours a week to them as possible.

Here's the second big thing where your commitment is important...

Doing the business for at least one year. That's twelve months, or 52 weeks for those of you keeping score at home. Yet how many people drop out in their first two weeks? How many give up after two months? How many times have you been involved in this business in the past and quit before a year was up?

The truth is, Network Marketing is a two to four year plan. As a rule, people do not get rich in four or six months. It takes time to locate key leaders, get them trained, and build the proper
infrastructure. Unless you're rolling over a bunch of people from some other company, there are no shortcuts to that.

I recognize that a two or four year commitment seems like a long time. But come on guys, what about the 45-year commitment your regular job is asking you for? And where will you be financially at the end of those four and a half decades?

So while a year won't necessarily make you well off, it is a very good point to pause and evaluate your progress. I believe that if someone really follows a system and really works the biz for 10 to 15 hours a week for a year - they will be at a place where they won't want to stop.

So the big commitments are really working the business for 10-15 hours a week, and agreeing to do that for at least one year. So how are you doing on that?

What did you really do for your 10 or 15 hours last week? What do you have scheduled this week. Give that some serious thought. And next week we'll look at the last of our seven things.

Until then, be great!

USANA: Nutritionists vs. Registered Dieticians

Hello Usana family,

First, I want to announce that we are having our first "big" Usana presentation in Manhattan Beach, CA on Thursday, November 1st entitled "The Power of USANA Nutrition" and I hope those of you who are local can join us. Please check the events calendar for complete details.

I am a nutritionist with a Master's degree in Holistic Health/Nutritional Medicine and near completion of a second Master's Degree in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport, a reputable program, and they provide all students with information about the difference between a Clinical Nutritionist (CN) and a Registered Dietician (RD) upon entry into the program. Here is a summary of the differences, and I thought this may help some of you when prospecting "nutritionists" or RDs.

"The Clinical Nutritionist (CN) generally maintains a philosophy that emphasizes wellness and optimal health, and is more likely to include a combination of dietary modulation, life-style modifications, the use of nutritional supplements and neutraceutical substances, and often other adjunctive modalities such as the limited use of herbs. Clinical Nutritionists often also utilize functional nutritional laboratory testing, not for the purpose of disease diagnosis, but to establish optimal versus sub-optimal levels of function in the body related to nutritional status. The legitimate training of a CN involves attending a graduate level (Master's or PhD) program at a regionally accredited university. The curriculum covers the foundations of clinical biochemistry and metabolism, research methodology, various styles of dietary intervention for optimal health and disease-specific care, nutritional assessment and laboratory analysis, and developmental nutrition. The program also heavily emphasizes the evidence-based use of nutritional supplements and nutriceutical substances for the betterment of general health and/or the complimentary management of individuals with specific health problems. (My involvement with USANA is what inspired me to obtain this Master's degree).

The Registered Dietician (RD) often comes from a much more conservative perspective and focuses mainly on the dietetics and food intake modulation to meet the needs of people who may be suffering from specific diseases, such as diabetes, kidney disease, etc. The RD may rarely utilize nutritional supplementation, but have traditionally been resistant, and often hostile, to the aggressive use of supplements." (Not all RDs are opposed to supplementation, but those I have encountered so far seem to share this philosophy.)

Hope this helps you when approaching "nutritionists"

UPDATE ON TRAINING CALLS

I know many people are wondering what the status of the small group training calls are. It's something I have certainly not forgotten about. I've been working on finding a way to get them effectively out thereto the team so we can create the ideal training situation.

Jason Wellsand I have had talked Tim Sales on a few different occasions to helpus out with the calls. When we release them to the team we need to make sure we have an infrastructure in place. Up until now, the only way people couldlearn the drills was to attend a Pro Inviter event that Tim put on. Thisis the first time he's released the drills to people outside his team toadminister them and drill other people.

We really worked with Tim to getthe drills so people wouldn't have to attend an event to get them. Obviously, having these drills bring a great deal of responsibility with them.

We need tomake sure that we have a process in place to administer them properly. Here's how that works:
We'll use "A" for an example. First, "A" must be drilled and pass that drill.
Then "A" must be observed in training someone else, "B." "B" must pass the drills.
Then "A" is observed observing "B" drilling "C". "C" mustpass the drills as well.

Once "A" has proven he or she is able to train people so that they can train to train, then the drilling process is done!As you can see, it's a thorough process.I'll keep you posted as we get the details figured out.

Take Multivitamins Urges American Medical Association

I wanted to share this article from the AMA journal. When someone tells you that they don't need to take vitamins since they eat well.... you can show them this. Let the experts speak for you.

Take Multivitamins Urges American Medical Association
August 31,2002

Reversing a long-standing anti-vitamin policy, The Journal of the American Medical Association today is advising all adults to take at least one multivitamin pill each day.

Scientists' understanding of the benefits of vitamins has rapidly advanced, and it now appears that people who get enough vitamins may be able to prevent such common chronic illnesses as cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis, according to Drs. Robert Fletcher and Kathleen Fairfield of Harvard University, who wrote the new guidelines.

The last time JAMA made a comprehensive review of vitamins, about 20 years ago, it concluded people of normal health shouldn't take multivitamins because they were a waste of time and money. People can get all the nutrients they need from their diet, JAMA advised, adding that only pregnant women and chronically sick people may need certain vitamins.

That was at a time when knowledge about vitamins was just beginning to expand. The role that low levels of folate, or folic acid, play in neural tube defects, for instance, was not known, nor was its role as a major risk factor for heart disease.
Researchers hope JAMA's endorsement will encourage more people to reap health benefits of a daily multivitamin.

Health experts are increasingly worried that most American adults do not consume healthy amounts of vitamins in their diet, although they may be getting enough to ward off such vitamin-deficiency disorders as scurvy, beriberi and pellagra.
Almost 80 percent of Americans do not eat at least five helpings of fruits and vegetables a day, the recommended minimum amount believed to provide sufficient essential nutrients. Humans do not make their own vitamins, except for some vitamin D, and they must get them from an outside source to prevent metabolic disorders.
"It's nice to see this change in philosophy that's saying we can make public-health recommendations based on this really compelling set of data," said Dr. Jeffrey Blumberg, chief of antioxidant research at Tufts University's Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging.

Blumberg said the JAMA recommendations underscore a growing concern among nutrition experts that the recommended daily allowances, or RDAs, for many vitamins are set too low.

RDAs essentially were established to prevent symptoms of vitamin-deficiency disorders, he said. But evidence is growing that higher levels of many vitamins are necessary to achieve optimum health, he said. The National Academy of Sciences, which sets RDAs, is revising its recommendations based on the new evidence.
Even people who eat five daily servings of fruits and vegetables may not get enough of certain vitamins for optimum health, Fletcher said. Most people, for instance, cannot get the healthiest levels of folate and vitamins D and E from recommended diets, he said.

"All of us grew up believing that if we ate a reasonable diet, that would take care of our vitamin needs," Fletcher said. "But the new evidence, much of it in the last couple of years, is that vitamins also prevent the usual diseases we deal with every day - heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and birth defects."

Hormone SOS

October, 2007
Feeling out of whack?
The lowdown on common imbalances—and a holistic guide to resolving them
By Kate Hanley

Months after a tumultuous, capital-B breakup, I still couldn't sleep more than four hours at a time. I nearly jumped out of bed with every night noise. And, most perplexingly, I craved any kind of crunchy snack—the saltier, the better. I chalked it up to a broken heart, but my chiropractor helped me address the root physical cause: A longtime overdose of stress had depleted my adrenal glands' ability to produce stress-management hormones.

Although we often think hormones relate only to PMS, pregnancy, or menopause, these powerful little chemicals have a much more far-reaching effect. "Hormones work in minute amounts to control everything from how our body functions to our emotions," explains Laurie Steelsmith, ND, LAc, author of Natural Choices for Women's Health (Three Rivers, 2005), so when they get off kilter, it can be difficult to diagnose—symptoms can range from dry skin to depression. But it's not all bad news. "Using natural remedies to coax your hormones back into balance can make a dramatic improvement in your quality of life," Steelsmith says. Read on to learn about the most common imbalances and natural remedies that correct them.

Do you have low thyroid?SymptomsOverwhelming fatigue; whole-body weight gain that is difficult to lose; constipation; constantly feeling cold; dry skin; swollen neck, face, hands, or feet; low blood pressure; thinning of the outer edges of the eyebrow; insomnia; headaches; and irregular periods. Likely causeThyroid imbalance can be triggered by prolonged stress. "It's as if someone took their foot off the gas pedal of your body," says Mary Shomon, low-thyroid sufferer, patient advocate, and bestselling author of The Thyroid Diet (HarperCollins, 2004). "When the body is under extreme stress, a lot of the hormones will shift to producing stress hormones, so metabolic [thyroid] and reproductive hormones get out of whack," she says. Thyroid imbalance, which can be hereditary, is also frequently tied to autoimmune disorders.

Natural fixes
Assess your iodine levels. Iodine is a building block of thyroid hormone. The body needs this nutrient to produce appropriate amounts of accessible thyroid hormone. However, taking too much could make immune problems worse. If you don't regularly eat seafood, seaweed, or iodized salt, be sure your multivitamin contains 100-150 mcg, the standard dose.
Add selenium and zinc to your supplement regimen. These minerals help the body convert thyroid hormone into an accessible form. Steelsmith recommends taking a daily multivitamin that contains 200 mcg of selenium and 40 mg of zinc.

Eat more rosemary.
The woodsy herb is a good source of carnosic acid, a compound that helps thyroid hormone do its job within cell nuclei. Add 1/4 teaspoon dried or 1/2 teaspoon fresh rosemary two or three times per week to your cooking, recommends Richard Shames, MD, author of Feeling Fat, Fuzzy, or Frazzled? (Plume, 2006).

Do you have adrenal fatigue?SymptomsA short fuse ("You did what?!"); a tendency to catch every virus that crosses your path; light-headedness when going from sitting to standing; a tendency to avoid stressful situations; depression; a need to eat frequently to ward off feelings of shakiness and spaciness; chronic allergies. "People with adrenal fatigue just can't get going in the morning. They're ready to go at night—your typical night owl," says Steelsmith.

Likely cause
Acute stress can cause your adrenals to produce an excess of stress hormones. If the stress persists long enough, the adrenals can become fatigued to a point at which they don't produce enough stress hormones, like a car running out of gas. Natural fixes
Boost your B vitamins. Vitamin B5, found in whole grains, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and salmon, is essential to the production of adrenal hormones. Take 500 mg a day. Shames also recommends taking 100-150 mg of B6 a day in addition to your multivitamin.
Take vitamin C, another key component in manufacturing adrenal hormones. Steelsmith recommends 1,000 mg twice a day.

Succumb to salty cravings.
Surprisingly, increased salt intake can help alleviate adrenal challenges because depleted adrenals often don't signal the kidneys to retain salt.

Try licorice.
Licorice extract (not the candy or the tea) in liquid or capsule form increases the body's ability to utilize cortisol, one of the major adrenal hormones. Licorice extract can cause high blood pressure, so consult a health care practitioner.

Do you have insulin resistance? Symptoms?
Significant weight gain around the abdomen; high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides; skin tags (small, benign polyps of excess skin); and infertility.Likely causeInsulin resistance occurs when cells throughout the body refuse to accept glucose from insulin, forcing the sugar to be stored in fat cells instead. It's triggered by a combination of stress, a diet high in refined carbohydrates, and a lack of exercise. "It's the end result of a string of bad choices that make you a more likely candidate for heart disease and type 2 diabetes," Steelsmith says. "But with lifestyle changes and a little help from supplementation, people can come out of it."Natural fixes
Start with your diet. Eat small meals four to six times a day to keep blood sugar levels even. Focus on low-glycemic foods, such as beans, legumes, whole grains, and fibrous fruits and vegetables, such as apples, pears, and sweet potatoes.

Take chromium.
It helps insulin deliver sugar to cells. Steelsmith suggests 500 mg twice a day.
Boost your biotin intake. This little-known B vitamin makes your cells more receptive to insulin. Chicken, milk, cheese, whole wheat, soybeans, cooked eggs, and saltwater fish are all good sources of biotin. Or take a 5 mg supplement twice a day, recommends Steelsmith.
Get moving. Steelsmith suggests exercising at least four times per week to reduce stress levels and help regulate blood sugar.

Do you have estrogen dominance?
Symptoms? Intense PMS with painful, swollen breasts and bloating; heavy periods; lumpy breasts; PMS-associated depression and headaches; grouchiness; anxiety; and fuzzy thinking. Likely causesThere are a range of reasons why your estrogen levels might be too high. Your thyroid-hormone levels could be low; your liver could be struggling to process and eliminate excess estrogen effectively; you could have too little progesterone (which balances estrogen); you may have been exposed to chemicals that mimic estrogen production (such as those commonly found in pesticides); or chronic constipation could be causing your body to reabsorb estrogen from your stool that would otherwise be excreted. Natural fixes

Take a lipotropic complex.
Lipotropic complex—a commonly available supplement formula—contains vitamins (such as B6), essential nutrients (such as choline), and herbs, including milk thistle (Silybum marianum), that work together to boost the liver's ability to process estrogen. Steelsmith recommends taking a supplement three times a day until your symptoms subside.

Add a squeeze of lemon.
Chinese medicine hails lemon's natural astringency for its ability to detoxify the liver. Add a twist of fresh lemon to your water.

Eat more cruciferous vegetables. They contain indole-3-carbinol (I3C), a compound that helps the liver break down estrogen into a more easily metabolized form. You can also buy I3C in supplement form. Shames recommends 200 mg per day.

Pump up your progesterone. This calming reproductive hormone acts as a counterbalance to estrogen. You can buy natural progesterone cream at your health food store; apply 1/4 teaspoon of cream to your chest, neck, or upper arms during the second half of your menstrual cycle to bring your estrogen-progesterone ratio into better balance.

How to proceedGet tested Although assessing your symptoms can shine a light on a likely hormone imbalance, the best way to know exactly what you're dealing with is to get your hormone levels tested. Saliva tests are accurate indicators and are less expensive and more convenient than blood tests.

Your doctor can order saliva tests that assess your levels of thyroid, sex, and stress hormones from any of these labs: Aeron Life Cycles, www.aeron.com; BioHealth, www.biohealth info.com; Diagnos-Techs Lab, www.diagnostechs.com; Genova Diagnostics, www.gdx.net; ZRT Labs, www.salivatest.com.

Find an expert
If you don't have a provider who is open-minded about diagnosing and treating hormone imbalance, your lab can often supply you with a list of nearby practitioners. Be patientResolving hormonal imbalance takes time, and changes are often gradual. "Try one remedy at a time and see how it affects your whole system for a couple of weeks before you add something else," Shames advises.

Kids' vitamin guide

When given the choice, the average 5-year-old is more likely to grab a french fry than a broccoli floret. Fortunately, a children's-specific, high-quality multivitamin can help provide crucial, missing nutrients, as well as build an early shield against diabetes, heart disease, and childhood cancers, says Shari Lieberman, PhD, FACN, a clinical nutritionist in New York City. But do children need additional supplements? And if so, how do you know which to choose? Three natural-health experts pinpoint the nutrients kids need and what to look for on a label.

Calcium
With just 20-100 mg of calcium, most children's multis don't come close to packing in the required amount kids need daily (800 mg for ages 4 to 8 years; 1,300 mg for kids older than 9 years). So if your children don't drink dairy or enriched soy milk, which contain 300 mg per cup, consider supplementing in at least two additional daily doses.

Iron
Many multis don't contain iron because it can be harmful if taken in high doses. But youngsters still need it. Your child could get the recommended 10 mg, though, by eating meat, spinach, or fortified cereals, says Marilyn Tanner, RD, a pediatric dietitian at St. Louis Children's Hospital. (Menstruating girls, who need 15 mg daily, are a possible exception.)

Folic acid
Essential for growth and the production of red blood cells (not to mention healthy gums, skin, and hair), folic acid supports nervous system function and repairs DNA damaged by toxins. It also may help protect against leukemia and other types of cancer. A typical kids' dose is 75-150 mcg daily.

Omega-3s
Mmm, fish oil. OK, it's not a food tykes typically beg for. But buy a fruit-flavored product and little Sally will gulp it down, says Lieberman. Packed with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), the omega-3s in fish oil help boost brain and eye development, and decrease the risk of aggression, depression, and ADHD. Read labels to ensure that fish oil has been tested for mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).

Probiotics
Adults aren't the only ones who need healthy gut flora—supplying your child's digestive system with probiotics (good bacteria) may boost her immunity by maintaining a healthy balance within her gastrointestinal tract, says Tara Skye Goldin, ND, of Boulder, Colorado.

In a 2005 study, people who took daily probiotics supplements for at least three months experienced shorter and less severe colds. Chewable probiotics are now made specifically for kids. Aim for 5 to 10 billion live micro-organisms daily, or serve your child Lactobacillus acidophilus-rich yogurt.

Vitamin A
Although vitamin A aids immunity and healthy vision, taking too much can be toxic to the liver and can leave bones prone to fracture, says Goldin. A safer option: Beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A in the body, is water soluble and can be excreted, unlike fat-soluble, preformed vitamin A (palmitate or retinol palmitate). Pick a kids' multi with vitamin A obtained solely through 2,100 IU beta-carotene.

Vitamin C
During cold and flu season (now!), increase your child's vitamin C intake to at least 1 gram, says Lieberman. Or add a gentle blend of herbs, such as echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) and astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus),an Asian root commonly used as a tonic in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Vitamin D
Growing bones need vitamin D, which is found in fortified milk and can be gained through sun exposure—part of why outdoor playtime is so important. Especially if you live in a cloudy climate, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that kids take a supplement with 800-1,000 IU of vitamin D daily.

The Law of Attraction

Have you ever wondered why it seems like everyone else has just the right "luck"?
I have been studying the principle of the law of attraction, and have decided that it is not just "luck" but rather it is what they "desire".

I am going to focus a lot on this principle in order to help others realize that they can attract into their lives just exactly what they desire.

There are dozens of books and audios on this subject. I have searched out several and I will share them with you.

I appreciate any feedback you care to give me.

Here is the first report.
Law of Attraction

Hopefully, it will inspire you to be able to achieve the desires of your heart.

Well, I guess the time has come for me to succumb to the "blog" world. Actually, this might be a great way to share information with others. I hope to present a lot of great material and links to other rescources that will help you become successful in the home-based business arena.

The first step is to help you determine if you would be successful having a home-based business of your own. Feel free to take the HomeBizQuiz and see the results. When you complete it, you will receive a couple of follow-up emails with more information.
