Oxidative Stress

Oxidative Stress
Health Concepts, PO Box 9226, Rapid City, SD 57709
http://www.bionutrition.org/oxidative-stress.asp

Even though the average life expectancy in the United States has increased dramatically during this past century, our quality of life due to chronic degenerative disease has taken a major hit. We are essentially "living too short and dying too long". Most of us can simply look forward to suffering and dying from heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s dementia, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, macular degeneration, and the list goes on and on, unless we literally attack the underlying cause of All of these diseases—oxidative stress.

How long do you expect to live? Now envision what your last twenty years will look like. I can assure you my patients today are not as concerned with the number of years in their lives as they are the quality of life in those years. Who wants to live to a ripe old age if he or she cannot even recognize close family members because of Alzheimer’s dementia? Who looks forward to a decade or two of suffering severe joint or back pain due to degenerative arthritis?

One of my close friends told me recently that he simply wants to live until he dies. Is this your desire? It certainly is mine. That is why I recommend preventative rather than post-problem medicine—empowering people to avoid getting major diseases in the first place. Over the past seven years, I have changed my approach. I now strongly encourage and support my patients in taking a three-fold approach to health: eating well, practicing a consistent exercise program, and daily consuming high-quality nutritional supplements. I now use medication as a last resort—not as my first choice.

Do you fear growing old? Have you accepted chronic disease or pain as a given in your future? Are you willing to make necessary life changes to ensure your health? I believe a full and abundant physical life does not need to start slipping away at age forty. Each year of your life can be your very best. But first you must understand the war that is waging within every one of our bodies.

Oxygen is essential for life itself. But did you know it is also inherently dangerous to our existence? I call this the "dark side" of oxygen. And as a result, we are essentially rusting both inside and out. The same process that causes a cut apple to turn brown or iron to rust is the cause of all the chronic degenerative diseases we fear and even the aging process itself.

Consider the aging of our skin. Oxidative stress is the cause of wrinkles, sagging skin, and age spots. The next time you are with a large gathering of people of different ages, observe closely the change you see in people’s skin. Aging is a process we all take for granted, but when you look more closely, and compare a baby’s face, to that of a grandparent’s, the effects of our largest organ being exposed to all the pollutants in the air, sunlight, and cigarette smoke is baffling. This aging of the skin is an outward manifestation of "oxidative stress," which is occurring within every cell in your body.

Over the past 7 years, I have reviewed well over 2,000 medical and scientific studies in regards to nutritional supplements and their affect on your health. These studies appearing in medical journals like the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical Association, British Lancet, and Annuals of Internal Medicine report that beyond any doubt the "root" cause of well over 70 chronic degenerative diseases is "oxidative stress." These are the "who’s who" of diseases we all fear and want to avoid; diseases like heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, Alzheimer’s dementia, macular degeneration, lupus, MS, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue. "So what," you may be wondering, "is ‘oxidative stress’?"

Within every cell of the body is a furnace called the mitochondria. As oxygen is utilized within the furnace of the cell to create energy and life itself, occasionally a charged oxygen molecule is created, called a "free radical." This free radical has at least one unpaired electron in its outer orbit essentially giving it an electrical charge. If this free radical is not readily neutralized by an antioxidant it can go on to create more volatile free radicals, damage the cell wall, vessel wall, proteins, fats, and even the DNA nucleus of our cells. Chemically this reaction has been shown to be so volatile that it actually causes bursts of light within our bodies!

Imagine yourself in front of a crackling fireplace and I’ll give you the best illustration I have to explain the process of oxidation. The fire burns safely and beautifully most of the time, but on occasion out pops a hot cinder that lands on your carpet and burns a little hole in it. One cinder by itself doesn’t pose much of a threat; but if this sparking and popping continues month after month, year after year, you will have a pretty "ratty" carpet in front of your fireplace.

The fireplace represents the furnace of the cell (the mitochondria), the cinder is the charged
"free radical," and the carpet is your body. Whichever part of your body receives the most free radical damage will be the first to wear out and potentially cause one of these degenerative diseases. If it’s your arteries, you could develop a heart attack or stroke. If it is your brain, you could develop Alzheimer’s dementia or Parkinson’s disease. If it’s your joints, you could develop arthritis.

Through biochemical research we’re learning that we are not defenseless against this attack on our body by free radicals. Antioxidants are like the glass doors or fine-wire mesh we place in front of our fireplace. The sparks are still going to fly but our carpet will then be protected. As you begin to imagine the war that is taking place within every cell in your body, you can envision the two opposing forces: the enemy—free radicals; and your allies—antioxidants and their supporting nutrients.

Living a healthy life becomes a matter of balance. You must have enough antioxidants available to readily neutralize the number of free radicals your body produces. If you don’t, "oxidative stress" will occur. When this oxidative stress is allowed to persist over a prolonged period of time, you will most likely develop a serious chronic degenerative disease.

Each of us must ask, "Am I getting enough antioxidants from my diet to protect myself from this onslaught of free radicals or do I need to be taking nutritional supplements?" This is the question that I’ve had to ask myself as I have spent countless hours researching medical literature. You see I was taught in medical school that you don’t need supplements—that you can get everything you need from a good, healthy diet.

And this is what I told my patients for years. I was wrong.

Since balance is the key, we need to look closely at the individual players that are at war within. The number of free radicals you produce each and every day is never the same. All the pollutants in our air, food, and water dramatically increase the number of free radicals we produce. Enormous stress, excessive exercise, cigarette smoke, sunlight, radiation, and every drug prescribed greatly increase the number of free radicals produced in the body. In fact, there has never been a generation on this planet subjected to more oxidative stress than this present one. We are literally under attack from our polluted environment, stressful lifestyles, and over-medicated society.

This ongoing attack is depriving us of our most precious gift—our health. But God did not leave us defenseless against this onslaught by free radicals. In fact, we actually have our own army of antioxidants, which are able to neutralize free radicals and render them harmless. In generations past, these defense systems were sufficient. Unfortunately this is no longer the case. Our bodies’ defense systems need additional allies.

Most antioxidants come from vegetables and fruit. This creates a gap in our protection, because our foods have become significantly depleted in their content of antioxidants and supporting minerals as a result of mineral depletion in our soils, green harvesting, cold storage, foods that are highly processed, our poor food choices and food preparation.

At a time when we are under the heaviest attack from the environment around us, our natural defense systems are becoming overwhelmed and depleted. We must do all we can to rebuild our antioxidant systems with a healthy diet, but too you need to learn how complete and balanced nutritional supplementation with high quality supplements (cellular nutrition) is our best hope in winning this war within and protecting our health.

Vitamin D levels inadequate in half of women treated with osteoporosis drugs

Vitamin D levels inadequate in half of women treated with osteoporosis drugs

Despite efforts to increase knowledge and emphasis on osteoporosis prevention and treatment, research indicates that many women treated for osteoporosis have low levels of vitamin D, a nutrient necessary for adequate bone mineralization.A recent study involved 1,536 postmenopausal women from 61 study sites who had been taking medications for the treatment of osteoporosis for a minimum of three months. Participants were allowed to have used vitamin D supplements as long as the dosage had remained consistent.

Overall, 52 percent of the women had vitamin D levels considered inadequate. Sixty-three percent of women who reported a supplemental intake of 400 IU's or less had inadequate vitamin D levels compared to 45 percent of those whose intake was 400 IU's or greater.

Lower levels were also associated with the lack of physician counseling regarding the importance of vitamin D in bone health. The results of this study emphasize the need for greater education of the public and physicians regarding the significance of vitamin D status in the care of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.

Business Building During the Holidays

Business Building During the Holidays
By Pete Zdanis

The holiday season is fast approaching, and with it can come a whole set of new obstacles for the uninformed network marketer.

The obstacles:

Uninformed Network Marketer Mentality: “I’m going to take some time off during the holidays, and then start building my business again after the New Year.”

Uninformed Prospects Mentality: “Your business really sounds interesting to me, but why don’t you get back to me after the New Year, and we can discuss it then.”

How can we address these obstacles? Let’s start with the uninformed network marketer mentality:

Momentum is a very important part of our business. Momentum is simply maintaining a steady pace at anything. Once you lose it, it requires a lot of effort to get it back.

Think about driving your car down the highway at a steady 65 miles per hour. You are moving toward your destination and making good progress. However, when you pull off to the side of the road and stop, you are losing time, and it will require more time and energy (in this case, gasoline) to get back on the highway and accelerate back up to your previous cruising speed to get where you want to go.

The same is true of your business. When you stop making approaches and followups, you are no longer moving toward your business goals. And, the longer you take “time off”, the more time you lose and the harder it will be for you to get back to your previous business building pace. You will need to start making approaches from scratch, and you will have lost many of your prospects due to lack of followup.

Let’s say that you follow the tried and true method laid out in the “Power Of Two”. If you stop building your business from now until, say, January 2, you will have missed out on 98 approaches, 14 presentations, and at least 2 or 3 enrollments. Can you afford that? I know that we can’t.

And don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you don’t want to “bother” people with something like USANA during the holiday season. As you know, this is the season of giving, and the USANA products and business truly are gifts which we offer to our prospects, and it is up to them do decide if they choose to accept our gift.

If you don’t believe that USANA is a gift, then you need to re-think your belief level and business motives. Remember, building a USANA business has nothing to do with you, and has everything to do with your customers and prospects. Let me repeat that: Building a USANA business has nothing to do with you, and has everything to do with your customers and prospects. When you help other people meet a need or solve a problem, abundance will definitely come your way – for you AND your team members.

If you are not comfortable with that concept, try a simple exercise the next time you make an approach or presentation. Instead of thinking “What will signing this person up as an Associate or Preferred Customer do for my business?”, approach it from the standpoint of “How can my gift of USANA help this person?” You will be truly amazed at the difference in your results by making this simple shift in your thinking.

You see, so many people get things backwards when trying to build their USANA business, and that’s what leads to problems and failure. I know when I started out and was talking to a prospect, the foremost thoughts in my mind were where I was going to place this person when they signed up, and how much it would help my business. Now admit it, you’ve probably had the same thoughts, and maybe you still do from time to time. But, once I focused on trying to figure out how my gift could help my prospects, everything changed for the better for everyone, including me.

Now let’s talk about the uninformed prospect:

If a prospect tries to put you off until after the holidays, first of all tell them that you appreciate their concerns and respect their time, but that you just want to make two points with them before they make a final decision to wait until January.

Tell them that most people feel the same was as they do, and want to wait until after the holidays. So, what happens is that January and February are very strong business building months because people are looking to make a new start and improve their health and/or financial situation. By getting their USANA business set up now, your prospect can benefit from all of this activity instead of just being a part of it.
A major benefit of having a USANA business can be the tax advantages it offers. By getting their business set up now, they can potentially benefit from tax savings when they file their return in a few months, rather than putting those benefits off until they file their tax return in 2009.

Tell them that you respect whatever decision they make, but that you just wanted to make sure that they were aware of those two major benefits.

Remember, building a USANA business has nothing to do with you, and has everything to do with your customers and prospects.

Seven things that will make a difference in terms of you building a large group

This is the next installment in our series of seven things that
will make a difference in terms of you building a large group.
These are what top leaders do to build a massive network.
(Sometimes consciously, sometimes instinctively.) The most
successful ones use all of them.

These seven things aren't really skills. Some are habits. Some
are mindset. And some are techniques. But they all are things
that you must use effectively to build a large business.

So let's look at number seven. And this one may surprise you.

SACRIFICE

After all, that's certainly not sexy to tell a prospect. And we
recruit all the time on money, lifestyle, and luxury. And you
know what? Network Marketing offers all those things. But not to
start.

To begin, and build something big - you're going to have to
sacrifice stuff.

You and everyone you bring into the biz are already using all 24
hours of every day. Using them doing certain things. In certain
ways. In ways that most likely keep you in your comfort zone.

You know from last week's lesson that you need at least 10 to 15
hours a week to do the business. That means you'll have to
sacrifice whatever you are now doing during that time.

Now that doesn't have to be forever. But it does have to be at
the start. I'm reading the new bestseller "The Four Hour Work
Week" by Timothy Ferriss right now. A lot of fun to read, and
some great stuff in there. But it's going to be dangerous for a
lot of people because they won't use discernment and critical
thinking.

It sounds great that he takes six months off to become a Chinese
kickboxing champion or spend a year learning to tango in Buenos
Aires. But he built up a cash flow business FIRST, before he
started his life of unending adventures.

I'm the #1 bonus check in my company and I have the kind of life
Timothy talks about in the book. I have great residual income. A
large chunk of it is passive income, and I can plan my whole
schedule around my softball teams.

And the truth is, I still sacrifice. Not because I need to -
because I choose to. Because I want to build my passive income
even higher.

My sponsor sees every blockbuster movie as soon as they come
out. He has a TiVo and watches at least five or six TV shows
regularly. I miss most of those or catch them on plane rides a
couple months later. My top leaders take more spa days than me.
Do a bunch of cruises, and take more vacations than I do.

I could do those things too and would get some enjoyment from
them. But I would rather sacrifice now, to get myself in a
better position for the future.

Don't get me wrong...

I do the stuff that brings me great joy. I'll go to the midnight
preview of a "Star Wars" or "Matrix" movie. I'll do the same
thing when a new Harry Potter book comes out and stay up all
night reading it. (Which you may have figured out I did
yesterday.) I have no compunction about turning down a $50,000
speech because it conflicts with softball playoffs. When it's
something I'm am really excited about, I'll do it. But I'm able
to do that because of previous sacrifices.

I missed some days at church when I started building my
business. Now on some Sundays my tithe check equals the other
799 people combined.

I drove long hours in a broke-mobile, working with long distance
lines when I started out. Now I travel in private jets or first
class.

My mantra was, "I will do today what others will not, so later I
can do what others cannot." And you know what? It worked.

So how about you?

Are you making the sacrifices today that will bring you true
freedom tomorrow? Or are you living in the moment of instant
gratification - which will actually keep you a grinder forever?

Give this some serious thought. And evaluate yourself in all
seven of the things we discussed in the series. Once again, they
are:

1) POSTURE
2) IMAGE
3) EVENTS
4) PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
5) CONSISTENCY
6) COMMITMENT
7) SACRIFICE

How many of these things do you use well? Remember that the top
people in the biz use all seven. Give yourself an honest
appraisal, and then you'll know where to build from there.

Have a great week!

CoQuinone® 30

The energy that every cell needs to function is produced through a complex process in the mitochondria, an organelle within the cell often called the cellular powerhouse. Cells store energy in a molecule called adenosine-5-triphosphate or ATP. CoQ10 is an essential part of the electron transport chain used to make ATP which is synthesized and used by every cell in the body. CoQuinone 30 contains advanced levels of CoQ10. Cells with the highest energy demands, such as in the heart, contain the highest levels of CoQ10. CoQ10 has been studied for years in the U.S., Europe, and Japan for its role in producing cellular energy and re-energizing the heart and other muscles.*

The Importance of Good Health and How to Achieve It

Probably the most important thing in live is good health. Without good health we may experience debilitating diseases and an unnecessarily short life span. It's fairly easy to achieve good health, but it involves certain changes in your life style that are sometimes difficult to do at first. The most important to remember is to begin slowly and try to make small changes at first. The most important facet of good health is adequate exercise. Exercises help us achieve good health by strengthening our cardio-vascular system, strengthening our muscle mass and reducing the affect of stress on the body.

To ensure that exercises do not appear to be chores, it is best to find exercises that you enjoy doing rather than those that you dread. For those who prefer to be outdoors, trekking, hiking, jogging or running may be the appropriate exercise to take up. On the other hand, for those who enjoy swimming, membership to a local pool may be the answer.

There are many alternative forms of exercise that you may find beneficial. Yoga is a very popular form of exercise that helps to strengthen your body, helps you lose weight, and is great as a stress reliever. Pilates is also very poplar and deals with the core strength of your abdominals. No matter what your interests are, you are sure to find an exercise that interests you.Poor eating habits are a precursor to poor health. Healthy eating is very important in achieving and maintaining good health. Those who have poor eating habits should slowly change by taking steps such as adding a small salad to your dinner, or a piece of fruit for dessert rather than ice cream.

The aim is to slowly change the eating habits by making sure that the bulk of what you consume is nutritious and full of vitamins and minerals. Moderation in what ever you do is the key to success.Staying away from over-processed foods is a great idea. Many people love the convenience of pre-packaged frozen foods that they can just pop in the microwave for a few minutes and have a "complete" meal.

A healthier approach would be to make several nutritious meals on Sunday night and freeze portions of it. This way you still maintain the convenience of fast meals but you also know what ingredients are used in the preparation. By making small changes to your life you can be eating healthier in no time.Excessive smoking or drinking is certainly detrimental to your good health.

It's okay to occasionally imbibe, a few drinks once in a while are fine, and small amounts of red wine are actually good for you, but there is no such exception for smoking. If you smoke, go talk to your doctor to discuss a smoking cessation program. Smoking endangers your health and the health of those around you. The sooner you quit smoking, the faster your body can begin to repair the years of damage. It is easy to achieve good health.

All it takes is making some changes to your diet and lifestyle. Start by taking the stairs at work instead of getting in the elevator. Or switch that favorite lunchtime meal of hamburger and fries for a wrap and a salad. Small, easy changes are the best way to start. By making these changes now you can enjoy good health well into your golden years.
Positive Thinking Can Bring Good Health

Your thoughts are in your control, and they can be very powerful.

Positive thoughts can motivate healthy behaviors, such as eating right and being active. It's simple really. If you believe you can take 10,000 steps a day, you will be more likely to take an extra walk to meet your goal. If you know you can avoid holiday weight gain, you'll feel great when you pass the tempting dessert buffet, and fit comfortably in your winter clothes.

But the reverse is also true. Your thoughts can be defeating. "I'm already overweight, so it doesn't matter if I eat a second piece of cake." Or, "I only have 10 minutes. It's not enough time to walk." Negative thoughts, often called negative self-talk, may sabotage your good intentions.

"I think I can"

Remember the famous children's book "The Little Engine that Could"? The theme, with its chant, "I think I can, I think I can," helped the small train make it up the hill. The book's message is as true today as it was when it was first published in 1930. If you set your mind to something, you can do it.

One in four Americans are trying to lose weight at any given time, and older adults are joining gyms in record numbers. If you are one of them, you are more likely to reach your health and fitness goals with the right attitude. Positive thinking can help you achieve and maintain healthy behaviors, such as becoming more physically active or limiting your sugar intake.

Studies have measured the success of positive-thinkers and found that those who think they can lose weight, or increase their physical activity, do! These people are more successful than people with less faith in themselves. The confidence you have in performing a certain behavior is called self-efficacy; and self-efficacy is a key in successful behavior change.

Want Results? Can Do!
Many professional athletes get top sports training and coaching in positive thinking to help them achieve their goals. And it works! The same can apply for you and me. A "can-do" attitude may be just what it takes to jumpstart a healthier lifestyle. Best of all, your attitude is something you can control. You have the choice to have a positive outlook. Chances are when you choose to think positively, you'll feel better about yourself and be able to perform better in whatever you do.

Losing 20 pounds or running a marathon this year may be unrealistic.
But there are small goals in your reach that do not require drastic life changes. For example, your weight loss goal may be to cut 100 calories a day. Try leaving two bites of hamburger on your plate, hold the jam but skip the butter on your bagel, or have water instead of fruit juice. You can also burn 100 calories more by taking the stairs, parking further from store entrances, or walking to a lunch spot further away from your office.

Keep Pushing
Like the "Little Engine", sometimes you need an extra push. There will be days when you don't floss, slip from eating right, or lose your temper. Small setbacks are normal. Learn from your past success and failures. Think about what sets you off course. Maybe it was the business travel that hurt your nutritional plan and exercise habits. Or maybe it was the looming deadlines and tight back-to-back appointments you had last week.

Take a minute to consider how you might have handled the situation differently. Maybe you could have shared a dish with a colleague at the business dinner or skipped the cocktail hour and the dessert tray. Don't dwell on the past. Move on and learn, so next time you will make healthier choices toward positive change.

How to Stay Positive
Positive thinkers admit when they feel frustrated or depressed. They don't ignore it. But they also don't blame themselves. Instead, they try to understand the negative thoughts and feelings and counter them with more positive ones.

So how do you stay positive, maintain momentum and sustain healthy behaviors?

Here are some tips:
Look for a good role model. There is always someone who seems to be doing just what you want to be doing. Maybe they've scheduled exercise into their workday and switched from coffee to herbal tea. Learn from a successful friend, family member or colleague. Ask them how they keep healthy and follow in their footsteps.

Try some positive self-talk and avoid negative-talk.
Take a minute to give yourself an ego boost. Repeat some motivational words out loud or to yourself. Negative talk, "I can't do it," "I'm fat," is dangerous for your well-being and healthy goals. Try to avoid the negative self-talk before it harms you. Remind yourself that you deserve happiness and can make positive changes.

Get support.
Tell your friends and family about your healthy habits. It helps to have an encouraging network.
Reward yourself.
Give yourself a pat on the back for your healthy efforts. Take a nice bath, get a massage, and enjoy a new DVD or CD.

Have a plan.
Making a plan to exercise or eat healthy lunches with a friend can mean the difference of sticking with your goals or falling off track. If you've planned for an activity, you'll likely stick with it. You may even find that writing down your goals and steps to achieve them can help you stay on track. Take it day by day or week by week. The process of writing down your personal action plan is a good way to keep you honest and watch your progress or pitfalls.

Take good products.
USANA's Commitment to Quality Assurance & Good Manufacturing Practices
Founded in 1992 by microbiologist and immunologist Dr. Myron Wentz, USANA Health Sciences is a science-based company that develops scientifically advanced nutritional, personal-care, and weight management products. The name "USANA" derives from Greek and Latin and means "true health."
USANA was founded with a mission to manufacture the highest quality products without compromise, products that people can trust. Because poor manufacturing can destroy great science, USANA is one of the few companies to manufacture most of its products in its own state-of-the-art facility. To ensure that the formulas developed in USANA's laboratories are produced consistently, the same process is followed each time manufacturing begins. When raw ingredients first arrive at USANA, they are immediately quarantined until they are tested for purity, potency, and quality. If an ingredient fails to meet set standards, it is rejected and returned to the supplier.

Second Annual CHF Charity Ball

Hello Integritas family,Mike Miller here with an important message. As many of you know, wejust came off an incredible weekend of a Diamond University and theSecond Annual CHF Charity Ball. It was an amazing weekend. Althoughthe final accounting is not done yet, right now it looks like we willhave about $25,000 in profits that will be donated to CHF.

Now, that may sound like a lot, but it is falling short of where weneed to be to make the difference we had envisioned. Many of you toldme that you wanted to be there, but couldn't make it. Well, if youcouldn't be part of the activities, you can still be part of thecause.

Would you consider making a donation. The theme for theweekend was a bag of beans. A simple little bag of beans can makethe difference between life and death for some many of thesechildren. AND, our dollar can stretch so much further than you canimagine. Would you consider buying a $15 bag of beans. If so youcan feed 50 people.

A $300 bin of beans will feed 2000 people! Ifyou can afford to sow (yes, we do reap what we sow, and CHF is goodfertile ground to sow into!) more, that's great! But it is not the size of the gift that counts, it is the giftitself. When you give to worthwhile causes like this, you cross overfrom the poverty mentality to the prosperity mentality. You aresending a strong signal to the subconscious mind that there is alwaysenough, and there is more where that came from. Our finances are canbe like the Dead Sea, or the Sea of Galilee. These are two bodies ofwater in the Middle East.

The Dead Sea has an inlet, but no outlet. The water turned to salt and supports no life whatsoever. The Sea ofGalilee has an inlet, and an outlet. It is full of all kinds of lifeand has supported life for thousands of years. There is a lesson tobe learned here.I would love to report to Mark Wilson and Dave Phillips (Founder ofCHF) that the Integritas family stepped up and as an organization wasthe number one contributor this year.

Let's make a difference! To make a donation, go to http://www.chfcharityball.com/. At the bottom of the page, click on the link that says, "Can't Attend? Donate!"

BEEN THINKING ABOUT: A SHUFFLED DECK

Life is like a game of cards. We have to work with what we’re dealt.

But what happens if we make up the rules as we go along? What if we assume that there is no real order or purpose to the shuffled deck of circumstance?

Questions like these were raised in 1990, when American educator and cultural critic (1931-2003) Neil Postman made an important address to the German Informatics Society. His speech was titled “Informing Ourselves To Death.”

Postman talked about the dangers of a society where the pursuit of information is separated from a shared sense of spiritual and social order.

To illustrate his point, Postman talked about the difference between dealing from a new deck of cards as it is taken out of the box and then doing the same with one that had been shuffled 20 times. The new deck presents the cards in a predictable order. Once the deck has been shuffled several times, there is no reason to react with disbelief or surprise to whatever card turns up.
Postman’s point was that information that is not rooted in a consistent view of life becomes like a shuffled deck of cards. He explains, “In a world without spiritual or intellectual order, nothing is unbelievable; nothing is predictable, and therefore, nothing comes as a particular surprise.” Like a voice in the wilderness, Postman declares, “We no longer have a coherent conception of ourselves, and our universe, and our relation to one another and our world. We no longer know . . . where we come from, and where we are going, or why . . . . As a consequence, our defenses against information glut have broken down; our information immune system is inoperable. We don’t know how to filter it out; we don’t know how to reduce it; we don’t know [how] to use it.

We suffer from a kind of cultural AIDS.”
Knowledge Without Roots

Neil Postman’s “Informing Ourselves To Death” describes not only the dangers of our present information-based culture but of our past as well. The opening chapters of Genesis tell how our first parents “informed themselves to death” by turning their backs on the moral order of their Creator to go after a kind of knowledge that ruined their lives.

In the middle of the growing confusion, some in every generation have looked for the “spiritual or intellectual order” that Postman talked about. In pursuit of practical answers, some have turned to the wisdom of a man named Solomon.

The Wisdom of Solomon
According to the Bible, God gave the third king of Israel an unusual capacity for wisdom and knowledge (1 Kings 4:29-34).

Solomon became a collector of proverbs. His thirst for knowledge was unquenchable. He had the curiosity of a scientist when it came to plants and animals (1 Kings 4:32-34). Leaders from all over the world came to hear his wisdom for themselves (1 Kings 10:22-24).

Even in the midst of unparalleled wealth and prosperity, Solomon would later write that the wisdom God gives is worth more than gold (Proverbs 3:13-18).

The Foolishness of Solomon

Ironically, over time Solomon ignored the counsel of the God who had given him power and wisdom (Deuteronomy 17:14-20). While multiplying personal wealth and wives, he indulged himself at the expense of those he was to serve. He even built altars to pagan gods on the hills surrounding Israel (1 Kings 11:1-11).

Late in life, Solomon wrote a short book that showed the deterioration of his mind. His thoughts had become like a shuffled deck of cards. His wisdom was mixed with despair. Until he recovered a healthy fear of God, he had no consistent way of evaluating success, failure, or even the significance of life itself (Ecclesiastes 12:1-7).

The Wisdom of Jesus

Solomon’s failures can help us understand the importance of Jesus.
Jesus, like Solomon, is remembered for His wisdom. Unlike Solomon, however, everything Jesus said and did reflected a consistent view of reality.

What really makes Jesus important to us is that He didn’t just give us words of wisdom. According to the apostle Paul, Jesus became the wisdom of God for us (1 Corinthians 1:30).
What did Paul mean when he said Jesus became wisdom for us? Was it that Jesus became our example of all that is good? Was it that His story gives us the ultimate answers to where we came from, where we are going, and why?

Paul’s own answer shows that Jesus did more than give us spiritual inspiration and answers to our moral questions. He wrote that Jesus, in addition to becoming wisdom for us, also became our “righteousness and sanctification and redemption.” He did all of this, Paul said, so that our confidence could be based on what Jesus did for us, rather than on what we could do for ourselves (vv.30-31).

In a second letter, Paul further explains that, to reconcile us to God, Jesus even became sin for us. So the apostle wrote, “He [God] made Him [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).

This is how Jesus became our wisdom. He offered Himself as the practical answer to the dilemma our first parents created when they sold their soul for “the knowledge of good and evil.” At the price of His own death, Jesus bought the right to offer life beyond the grave to anyone who would trust Him.

Why would He do it for us? Because, in the ultimate sense, Jesus is like an unshuffled deck of cards. All order, design, and purpose begin and end in Him. As our Creator, Judge, and Savior, He alone can call us back to the knowledge we’ve lost when He says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

And so we pray, Father in heaven, forgive us for thinking of Your Son only as our example or our teacher. Help us to see Him as the root of all true answers, the Savior who pursues us, and the One who, to show Your love, became wisdom for us. –Mart De Haan

For Gen X, it's time to grow up and get a broker
Many say they have high debt, little ability to save for retirement

By Jennifer Alsever
MSNBC contributor

Generation X may have shed the slacker image over the past decade as its members moved beyond coffee shop jobs and into the suburbs, SUVs and corporate boardrooms. But when it comes to saving for retirement, the description still fits.
Most Gen Xers, the oldest of whom are heading into their 40s, are woefully behind in saving for retirement. Nearly half of the 5,000 Gen Xers surveyed by Charles Schwab this year said they are so saddled with debt or live on such tight budgets they can’t even think about saving.
“They’re not a saving generation — they’re spenders,” said Gio Van Remortel, a 36-year-old who studies her generation as a futurist at Social Technologies, a research and consulting firm in Washington.

Story continues below ↓

Melanie Keller, 35, admits that fact. She worries about retirement because she only has $3,000 put away in a 401(k) plan and has no other investments. But instead of socking away money for retirement, the pharmaceutical saleswoman is trying to save $60,000 so she can buy a starter home where she lives in San Jose, Calif.

“I am worried, but I don’t feel like after I pay all the bills — with rent, car payment — I have enough money” for savings, she said.

Indeed, the expenses of a house, car and all the other possessions that go along with being an adult often leave Gen Xers very little to sock away in a 401(k) system that grows money incrementally, said Van Remortel. Even if they are not supersizing their lives and living beyond their means, she said, many Gen Xers — generally defined as those born from 1965 to 1980 — carry significant debt due to college alone. Once they have kids, they begin to worry about saving for their college educations, and retirement planning often drops in priority.

Recognizing those pressures, investment firms are offering new incentives tailored to get Gen Xers to invest. The Principal Financial Group, which runs 401(k) plans for 47,000 employers and their 3 million workers, offers free music downloads to people who boost their contributions to retirement accounts. The company also sends financial counselors to the offices of their clients to offer free advice on 401(k) planning.

Fact File Generation X
— 62 percent say they live paycheck to paycheck.
— 56 percent have an outstanding credit-card balance of $3,000 or more.
— 62 percent of women say they have not bought any investment products.
— 45 percent of women would buy 30 pairs of shoes before saving $30,000 in retirement assets.
— 65 percent of women and 48 percent of men said they do not know how a mutual fund works.
— Nearly 65 percent did not know that when interest rates go up bond prices typically go down.
— 38 percent of women have not started saving for retirement.

Source: OppenheimerFunds

Broker Charles Schwab meanwhile has lowered its minimum balances to $100 for people opening new investment accounts and offers high-yield checking accounts linked to brokerage accounts. “If they can start with a checking account, they can invest easily over time,” said Jonathan Craig, a vice president at Schwab.

Still, Gen Xers may face bigger financial challenges than their parents and grandparents did. On top of the big mortgages, college loans and the rising child education costs, they face the fact that few employers offer traditional pensions anymore, meaning they take on more of the burden of retirement. Plus, the future of Social Security is more uncertain than ever. Unless Congress makes changes, the trust fund that helps pay for the federal entitlement is likely to be exhausted by 2040 — about the time most Gen Xers hit retirement.

Credit card debt, too, remains another big roadblock to many people. As many as 40 percent of Gen X women and 58 percent of men said they carried a credit card balance of $5,000 or more, according to a 2006 survey of 300 people by OppenheimerFunds. Nearly half of women interviewed said they would rather buy 30 pairs of shoes than save $30,000 for retirement.
Waiting to pay off that debt before saving for retirement could be a big mistake, said Doug Charney, president of the Charney Investment Group of Wachovia Securities in Harrisburg, Pa.
“Pay yourself first,” Charney said. He advises people to set aside at least 15 percent of their income into a retirement account. If that’s too much, people should start small with maybe 4 percent or 5 percent and gradually increase the contribution as they get pay raises.

“If you don’t save 10 percent of your income, you won’t be able to maintain the lifestyle you’re used to,” Charney said. For many people, that equates to saving about $2 million by retirement, after accounting for inflation. Those who haven’t put away enough money may have to work into their 70s. (Charney later sent an e-mail raising his target to 15 percent of income.)

Still, many people don’t understand how to invest or what is the best way to invest, and some are spending the retirement money they do save, according to surveys by financial institutions. As many as 40 percent of people cash out their 401(k) money when they leave a job rather than rolling the money over to grow in another retirement account, according to the Principal Financial Group.

Count Robert Betts as one of those people who made that decision. Burned out on his job at a Manhattan advertising agency, the 36-year-old Betts quit his job in 2005 and blew through $28,000 from his 401(k) plan while unemployed for 18 months. Now working for a Denver ad agency, he puts $500 a month into his 401(k) in an effort to catch up.

“When you see your 401(k) grow on top of what you put into it, it’s tough to swallow that you could have been doing that for 10 years,” said Betts. But he doesn’t regret using the retirement money to take time to clear his head.

“I could die poor in the gutter at 60, and I wouldn’t regret taking that money,” he said. “I’m much happier, and my career is on track.”

The Psychology of Motivation

From: Kay & Robert Strong
Compelling 'Why' by Denis Waitley (excerpted from The Psychology of Motivation)

I have a suitcase for you. In that suitcase there is $1 million in cash. The suitcase is sitting in a building that is about an hour's drive from where you are now. Here is the deal: All you have to do is get to this building in the next two hours. If you get there before the end of the two hours, I will hand you the suitcase, and you will be a million dollars richer.

There is one catch, however. If you are even one second late, our deal is off, and you will not get a dime. No exceptions! With that in mind, what time would you like to leave?
Most people would respond to that scenario by saying that they would leave right now. Wouldn't you?

So off you go. You jump into your car and start driving for the building. You are excited and are already starting to plan how you are going to spend your million dollars. Then, suddenly, the traffic comes to a complete stop. You turn on the radio and find that there has been a series of freak accidents between you and the building and there is no way to get there!
Now what would you do? Would you give up and go back home? Or would you get out of your car and walk, run, hire a helicopter, or find some other way of getting to the building on time?

Now let's suppose for a minute that you are driving to an appointment at your dentist's office. The traffic again comes to a stop. Amazingly, there have been freak accidents between you and your dentist's office. What would you do then? Probably give up, go home, and reschedule!

What is the difference between these two situations? It all comes down to why. If the why is big enough; the how is usually not a problem. This compelling why is connected to your personal objectives, mission statement, or magnificent obsessions. It is the basis of your motivational support beam. Truly motivated people are able to identify and tap into the power of a compelling why in everything they do.

Antioxidants and Phase 2 Enzymes in Cardiomyocytes

Antioxidants and Phase 2 Enzymes in Cardiomyocytes:

The increasing recognition of the role for oxidative stress in cardiac disorders has led to extensive investigation on the protection by exogenous antioxidants against oxidative cardiac injury. On the other hand, another strategy for protecting against oxidative cardiac injury may be through upregulation of the endogenous antioxidants and phase 2 enzymes in the myocardium by chemical inducers. However, our current understanding of the chemical inducibility of cardiac cellular antioxidants and phase 2 enzymes is very limited.

In this study, using rat cardiac H9c2 cells we have characterized the concentration- and time-dependent induction of cellular antioxidants and phase 2 enzymes by 3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione (D3T), and the resultant chemoprotective effects on oxidative cardiac cell injury. Incubation of H9c2 cells with D3T resulted in a marked concentration- and time-dependent induction of a number of cellular antioxidants and phase 2 enzymes, including catalase, reduced glutathione (GSH), GSH peroxidase, glutathione reductase (GR), GSH S-transferase (GST), and NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase-1 (NQO1). D3T treatment of H9c2 cells also caused an increase in mRNA expression of catalase, -glutamylcysteine ligase catalytic subunit, GR, GSTA1, M1 and P1, and NQO1.

Moreover, both mRNA and protein expression of Nrf2 were induced in D3T-treated cells. D3T pretreatment led to a marked protection against H9c2 cell injury elicited by various oxidants and simulated ischemia-reperfusion. D3T pretreatment also resulted in decreased intracellular accumulation of reactive oxygen in H9c2 cells after exposure to the oxidants as well as simulated ischemia-reperfusion. This study demonstrates that a series of endogenous antioxidants and phase 2 enzymes in H9c2 cells can be induced by D3T in a concentration- and time-dependent fashion, and that the D3T-upregulated cellular defenses are accompanied by a markedly increased resistance to oxidative cardiac cell injury.

Antioxidant Vitamin Supplements and Cardiovascular Disease

Antioxidant Vitamin Supplements and Cardiovascular Disease

Penny M. Kris-Etherton, PhD, RD; Alice H. Lichtenstein, DSc; Barbara V. Howard, PhD; Daniel Steinberg, MD, PhD; Joseph L. Witztum, MD, for the Nutrition Committee of the American Heart Association Council on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism

Key Words: AHA Science Advisory • antioxidants • nutrition • coronary disease • cardiovascular diseases

The American Heart Association (AHA) has had a long-standing commitment to provide information about the role of nutrition in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk reduction. Many activities have been and are currently directed toward this objective, including issuing AHA Dietary Guidelines periodically (most recently in 20001) and Science Advisories and Statements on an ongoing basis to review emerging nutrition-related issues. The objective of the AHA Dietary Guidelines is to promote healthful dietary patterns. A consistent focus since the inception of the AHA Dietary Guidelines has been to reduce saturated fat (and trans fat) and cholesterol intake, as well as to increase dietary fiber consumption. Collectively, all the AHA Dietary Guidelines have supported a dietary pattern that promotes the consumption of diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or nonfat dairy products, fish, legumes, poultry, and lean meats. This dietary pattern has a low energy density to promote weight control and a high nutrient density to meet all nutrient needs.

As reviewed in the first AHA Science Advisory2 on antioxidant vitamins, epidemiological and population studies reported that some micronutrients may beneficially affect CVD risk (ie, antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin E, vitamin C, and ß-carotene). Recent epidemiological evidence3 is consistent with the earlier epidemiological and population studies (reviewed in the first Science Advisory).2 These findings have been supported by in vitro studies that have established a role of oxidative processes in the development of the atherosclerotic plaque. Underlying the atherosclerotic process are proatherogenic and prothrombotic oxidative events in the artery wall that may be inhibited by antioxidants.

The 1999 AHA Science Advisory2 recommended that the general population consume a balanced diet with emphasis on antioxidant-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, advice that was consistent with the AHA Dietary Guidelines at the time. In the absence of data from randomized, controlled clinical trials, no recommendations were made with regard to the use of antioxidant supplements.

In the past 5 years, a number of controlled clinical studies have reported the effects of antioxidant vitamin and mineral supplements on CVD risk (see Tables 1 through 3).4–21 These studies have been the subject of several recent reviews22–26 and formed the database for the present article. In general, the studies presented in the tables differ with regard to subject populations studied, type and dose of antioxidant/cocktail administered, length of study, and study end points. Overall, the studies have been conducted on post–myocardial infarction subjects or subjects at high risk for CVD, although some studied healthy subjects.

In addition to dosage differences in vitamin E studies, some trials used the synthetic form, whereas others used the natural form of the vitamin. With regard to the other antioxidants, different doses were administered (eg, for ß-carotene and vitamin C). The antioxidant cocktail formulations used also varied. Moreover, subjects were followed up for at least 1 year and for as long as 12 years. In addition, a meta-analysis of 15 studies (7 studies of vitamin E, 50 to 800 IU; 8 studies of ß-carotene, 15 to 50 mg) with 1000 or more subjects per trial has been conducted to ascertain the effects of antioxidant vitamins on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.27 Collectively, for the most part, clinical trials have failed to demonstrate a beneficial effect of antioxidant supplements on CVD morbidity and mortality. With regard to the meta-analysis, the lack of efficacy was demonstrated consistently for different doses of various antioxidants in diverse population groups.

Although the preponderance of clinical trial evidence has not shown beneficial effects of antioxidant supplements, evidence from some smaller studies documents a benefit of -tocopherol (Cambridge Heart AntiOxidant Study,13 Secondary Prevention with Antioxidants of Cardiovascular disease in End-stage renal disease study),15 -tocopherol and slow-release vitamin C (Antioxidant Supplementation in Atherosclerosis Prevention study),16 and vitamin C plus vitamin E (Intravascular Ultrasonography Study)17 on cardiovascular end points. To complicate matters, there is some evidence of potentially adverse effects of antioxidant supplements on CVD as assessed by angiographic end points. In the Women’s Angiographic Vitamin and Estrogen Study,21 postmenopausal women with coronary disease on hormone replacement therapy given vitamin E plus vitamin C had an unexpected significantly higher all-cause mortality rate and a trend for an increased cardiovascular mortality rate compared with the vitamin placebo women. Likewise, in the HDL-Atherosclerosis Treatment Study,20 subjects with angiographically demonstrated coronary artery disease on simvastatin/niacin and an antioxidant cocktail (vitamin E, ß-carotene, vitamin C, and selenium) had a 0.7% progression in stenosis after 3 years, compared with 0.4% regression in the group on only simvastatin/niacin. Thus, antioxidant supplements may have interfered with the efficacy of statin-plus-niacin therapy. Further evaluation showed that the addition of the antioxidant vitamins blunted the expected rise in the protective HDL-2 cholesterol and apolipoprotein A1 subfractions of HDL. In general, the studies showing either positive or adverse effects (especially for vitamins E, vitamins E and C, and the antioxidant cocktails) are much smaller studies than the larger clinical trials that consistently have not shown any beneficial effects of antioxidant supplements on several CVD end points.

Thus, in agreement with many in the field, we conclude that the existing scientific database does not justify routine use of antioxidant supplements for the prevention and treatment of CVD.25–28,29 This conclusion is consistent with the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association 2002 Guideline Update for the management of patients with chronic stable angina, which states that there is no basis for recommending that patients take vitamin C or E supplements or other antioxidants for the express purpose of preventing or treating coronary artery disease (Class III, Level A Evidence).30 In addition, "Evidence-Based Guidelines for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Women"31 concludes that antioxidant vitamin supplements should not be used to prevent CVD, pending the results of ongoing trials (Class III, Level A Evidence). Whether or not to use vitamin E in highly specialized situations, such as in subjects on hemodialysis,15 also remains unsettled until further studies in this setting are conducted. Moreover, although there is some evidence of beneficial effects of antioxidant supplements, it also is apparent that some studies suggest adverse effects of antioxidant supplement use. An important question is: What should we be doing in clinical practice? At this time, there is little reason to advise that individuals take antioxidant supplements to reduce risk of CVD. Nonetheless, we recommend that antioxidant research continue in order to resolve whether the oxidative modification hypothesis is relevant to human atherosclerosis. It will be important to clarify the discrepancy between the randomized clinical trials and the population studies. The positive findings from observational studies with regard to vitamin E supplementation and lower rates of CVD may be a reflection of the generally healthy lifestyles and dietary intakes of supplement users. At this time, the scientific evidence supports recommending consumption of a diet high in food sources of antioxidants and other cardioprotective nutrients, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts, instead of antioxidant supplements to reduce risk of CVD.32,33 It does not support the use of antioxidant vitamin supplements.

The failure of these particular trials does not necessarily rule out a role for oxidative mechanisms in the pathogenesis of human atherosclerosis. Antioxidant compounds cannot be indiscriminately lumped together; they differ quantitatively and even qualitatively from one another. We still know too little about the oxidative mechanisms in vivo and lack biochemical markers with which to evaluate candidate antioxidant compounds. Moreover, antioxidant treatment may need to begin earlier in life to be effective. The discrepancy between the impressive observational data and the clinical trials could reflect the difference between lifelong exposure to an antioxidant-rich diet and a limited, 5-year exposure to antioxidant supplements. However, several other factors (such as identity, type, and form of antioxidant; particular antioxidant combinations; trial design issues; outcome measures; length; populations under study; etc) could also be important in explaining the lack of agreement between the predicted positive benefits and the results of the clinical trials conducted to date. Clearly, further research is needed.

MLM MARKETING CLOSING THE DEAL

Closing the Sale

Working your Usana business involves many aspects, but the bottom line is that in order to grow, you need to close the sale. For some, closing the sale will require learning new skills. Here are some useful things to remember while taking your prospects past discussion, and onto enrollment.

1. Build relationships

Closing will be easier once trust and bonds are built. Spend some time getting to know each other. Listen more than you talk. When you do speak, share your absolute passion for these incredible products, the company and the opportunity. But stay focused on the benefits to your prospect. Your closing has already begun when you make the meeting all about the prospect.

2. Always presume the sale

Go into the conversation knowing that the prospect wants and needs the products, AND the opportunity. We all know that these products give FANTASTIC results. Assume that everyone else wants the same! And we especially want this for those we care about. On top of this, the science is there to support the quality of these products, and good nutrition DOES help prevent disease, so we can be confident in our knowing. Use phrases such as "When you begin to take these supplements...." Talk about the products/opportunity as if they have already made the purchase. Even if they don't want to run a business, they will probably want to get their products paid for by becoming a referral associate.

3. Listen for the signals, and give options

Train your ear to recognize when the prospect is ready to buy. Listen for language that turns into a sale (example: the prospect asks specific questions about details, such as delivery time or exact pricing). Then, help the prospect make his/her own decision by offering options (example: "Which product is more interesting to you, the Essentials or the HealthPak?"). Options are less threatening, and help them to continue thinking, and talking to you.

4. Ask for the sale using open ended questions, and multiple times!

Using questions that cannot be answered with a yes or no answer will encourage the prospect to speak about themselves, helping you to get to know their needs. "Why" is a good starting word for those questions (example: "Why are you interested in taking supplements?" or "Why are you thinking about changing brands of supplements?"

When it comes to asking for the sale, you will probably need to ask at least five times, in different non-threatening ways, using these open ended questions. (example: "If you were planning to buy one of our products today, which one would it be?"). Many times the prospect will close their own sale by answering this question. (More examples: "Would you like to start with the Healthpak - or the Essentials?", "One business center or three?").

5. If necessary, use a soft close

If the prospect is really not ready to sign on the dotted line today, you can use a "soft close", such as giving samples of products, or literature, and setting a time to follow up. Make sure to follow up exactly when you said you would, and be ready to keep the conversation going. Ask about their experience with the samples, and listen.

6. Handling objections

Handling objections is a whole topic in itself, but in order to close the sale you will undoubtedly come up against objections, so here is one technique that many use to handle any objection at all. The "feel", "felt", "found" technique is an excellent way to bond and form a relationship, which is the first point we discussed.

When the prospect objects, you simply say, "I know exactly how you feel about that.....)". "I have felt that way myself before...." "And what I have found is that....). Experiment with some different examples for yourself to see just how effective and easy this is. We are not trying to convince anyone of anything. We are helping them understand the benefits of the products and the opportunity, and helping them come to their own conclusion about how their lives can be improved. If, after handling many objections, the prospect is still completely uninterested, it's probably time to move on.

Hope these tips are helpful! Happy Prospecting!

Widespread Vitamin D Deficiency Drains Billions of Dollars from Canadian Health Care System

The Vitamin D society, a Canadian non-profit group organized to increase awareness of the many health conditions strongly linked to vitamin D, has calculated the cost of vitamin D deficiency on the Canadian health care system to be no less than $9 billion dollars annually.

Vitamin D has long been known only for its role in bone health and proper calcium absorption. However, the explosion of research over the past few years has revealed that vitamin D plays a key role in cell growth regulation in the body, and may be related to the prevention of 22 forms of cancer as well as heart disease, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, and many other disorders.Due to what is being considered a Canadian crisis and worldwide problem, the Vitamin D Society is recognizing the month of November as Vitamin D Awareness Month.
