23 Ways to Reduce Wrinkles

Worried that your skin looks older than you feel? Here are 23 ways to reduce wrinkles – starting now!

Whether you're 35 and just beginning to see the first signs of aging, or 55 with skin that isn't exactly keeping your birthday a secret, seeking ways to reduce wrinkles is probably on your agenda.

At the same time, experts say, many of us are losing the wrinkle battle, watching helplessly as the glow of youth goes on the dimmer switch.

"Many women as well as men believe that aging skin is inevitable, but with the information and technologies we have today, you really can look as young as you feel," says Robin Ashinoff, MD, a dermatologist at the Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey.

To help put you on the right path, WebMD asked Ashinoff and several other experts what really works to reduce wrinkles. What follows are 23 ways experts say you can make a difference. While some require a visit to the dermatologist, many are things you can do on your own.

How to Reduce Wrinkles: What You Can Do

1. Avoid the sun. It's the No. 1 cause of wrinkles, with dozens of studies documenting the impact. In one study that looked at identical twins, New York plastic surgeon Darrick Antell, MD, found sun exposure was even more important than heredity. Siblings who limited sun time had fewer wrinkles and looked younger overall than their sun-worshiping twins.

2. Wear sunscreen. If you must go out in the sun, the American Academy of Dermatology says, wear sunscreen! It will protect you from skin cancer, and help prevent wrinkles at the same time. Make sure they contain Active ingredients, or the sunscreen is not effective to prevent wrinkles or skin cancer.

3. Don’t smoke. Some of the research is still controversial, but more and more studies are confirming that cigarette smoke ages skin -- mostly by releasing an enzyme that breaks down collagen and elastin, important components of the skin. Sibling studies done at the Twin Research Unit at St. Thomas Hospital in London found the brother or sister who smoked tended to have skin that was more wrinkled and up to 40% thinner than the non-smoker.

4. Get adequate sleep. Yale dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, MD, says that when you don't get enough sleep, the body produces excess cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells. Get enough rest, Perricone says, and you'll produce more HGH (human growth hormone), which helps skin remain thick, more "elastic," and less likely to wrinkle.

5. Sleep on your back. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) cautions that sleeping in certain positions night after night leads to "sleep lines -- wrinkles that become etched into the surface of the skin and don't disappear once you're up. Sleeping on your side increases wrinkles on cheeks and chin, while sleeping face-down gives you a furrowed brow. To reduce wrinkle formation, the AAD says, sleep on your back. Hand under face can stretch or pull the skin in an unnatural position, pretty hard to control your sleeping position while asleep!

6. Don't squint -- get reading glasses! The AAD says any repetitive facial movement -- like squinting -- overworks facial muscles, forming a groove beneath the skin's surface. This groove eventually becomes a wrinkle. Also important: Wear sunglasses. It will protect skin around the eyes from sun damage -- and further keep you from squinting.

7. Eat more fish -- particularly salmon. Not only is salmon (along with other cold-water fish) a great source of protein -- one of the building blocks of great skin -- it's also an awesome source of an essential fatty acid known as omega-3. Perricone tells WebMD that essential fatty acids help nourish skin and keep it plump and youthful, helping to reduce wrinkles. (And Biomega is beneficial for the skin too!)

8. Eat more soy -- So far, most of the proof has come from animal studies, but research does show certain properties of soy may help protect or heal some of the sun's photoaging damage. In one recent human study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, researchers reported that a soy-based supplement (other ingredients included fish protein and extracts from white tea, grapeseed, and tomato, as well as several vitamins) improved skin's structure and firmness after just six months of use.

9. Trade coffee for cocoa. In a study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2006, researchers found cocoa containing high levels of two dietary flavanols (epicatchin and catechin) protected skin from sun damage, improved circulation to skin cells, affected hydration, and made the skin look and feel smoother. Coffee dehydrates the skin.

10. Eat more fruits and vegetables. The key, says Klaus, are their antioxidant compounds. These compounds fight damage caused by free radicals (unstable molecules that can damage cells), which in turn helps skin look younger and more radiant, and protects against some effects of photoaging.

11. Use moisturizer. "Women, especially, are so concerned with anti aging products they often overlook the power of a simple moisturizer. Skin that is moist simply looks better, so lines and creases are far less noticeable," says Ashinoff. Choose a skin care line with anti aging ingredients like antioxidants.

12. Don't over-wash your face. According to dermatologists at the University of Maryland Medical Center, tap water strips skin of its natural barrier oils and moisture that protect against wrinkles. Wash them off too often, and you wash away protection. Moreover, unless your soap contains moisturizers, you should use a cleanser instead. Most OTC cleansers contain SLS (detergent) that dries the skin and is irritating for skin.

Topical Treatments That Reduce Wrinkles

Studies show the following ingredients can reduce wrinkles. Most are found in a variety of skin-care treatments, both prescription and over-the-counter.

13. Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs). These natural fruit acids lift away the top layer of dead skin cells, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, particularly around the eyes. New evidence shows that in higher concentrations, AHAs may help stimulate collagen production.

14. Retinoids (including Retin A). The only FDA-approved topical treatment for wrinkles is tretinoin, known commercially as Retin A. Ashinoff says this prescription cream reduces fine lines and large wrinkles, and repairs sun damage. Retinol is a natural form of vitamin A found in many over-the-counter products. Studies show that in a stabilized formula, in high concentrations, it may be as effective as Retin A, without the side effects, such as skin burning and sensitivity.

15. Topical vitamin C. Studies at Tulane University, among others, have found it can increase collagen production, protect against damage from UVA and UVB rays, correct pigmentation problems, and improve inflammatory skin conditions. The key, however, may be the type of vitamin C used. (To date, most of the research points to the L-ascorbic acid form as the most potent for wrinkle relief This is totally wrong, L-Asboric Acid has been known to be unstable, and we know that Sensé has a very powerful Vitamin C in our Proteo C ™)

16. Idebenone. This chemical cousin to the nutrient coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)is a super-powerful antioxidant. In one study published recently in the Journal of Dermatology, doctors found that with just 6 weeks of topical use, there was a 26% reduction in skin roughness and dryness, a 37% increase in hydration, a 29% decrease in lines and wrinkles, and a 33% overall improvement in sun-damaged skin. Other studies have found similar results. Again another error, Idebenone in the quantity used is skin care products is so low it is less effective than most antioxidants. For example Elizabeth Arden only has 0.5% Idebenone, where the original M.D. Forte Skin care sold in Doctors offices has 1%. The company that produces this ingredient claims it is better than Vitamin C-E,Alpha Lipolic Acid Co-Q 10 and Kinetin (plant hormone). The study however did not compare the effects of the ingredients to the many other potent antioxidants and the study only involved 30 subjects! Side Note: Elizabeth Arden's Prevage (Idebenone product) costs $200.00 Canadian the last time I looked.

17. Growth factors. Part of the body's natural wound-healing response, these compounds, when applied topically, may reduce sun damage and decrease lines and wrinkles, while rejuvenating collagen production, studies have shown. I believe I did a report on the pros and cons of Growth factors in skin care.

18. Pentapeptides. According to Lauren Thaman Hodges, associate director of global skin science for Procter & Gamble, the results of a study supported by the National Institutes of Health suggested pentapeptides can increase collagen production in sun-damaged skin. Several subsequent studies (including one presented at a recent national dermatology conference) showed that when topically applied, pentapeptides stimulated collagen production and diminished lines and wrinkles.

Medical/Spa Treatments That Reduce Wrinkles

19. Botox. An injection of this purified version of the A-Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscle just underneath the wrinkle, allowing the skin on top to lie smooth and crease-free.

20. Wrinkle fillers. Doctors fill wrinkles with a variety of substances, including collagen, hyaluronic acid, and other synthetic compounds. Popular treatments include Restylane, Juvaderm, and ArteFill, among others.

21. Laser/light resurfacing. Here, energy from a light source -- either a laser or a pulsed diode light -- removes the top layer of skin, causing a slight but unnoticeable skin "wounding." This kicks the skin's natural collagen-production system into high gear, resulting in smoother, more wrinkle-free skin.

22. Chemical peels. In this treatment, one of a variety of different chemicals is used to "burn" away the top layer of skin, creating damage that causes the body to respond by making more collagen. You end up with younger-looking, smoother skin.

23. Dermabrasion. A vacuum suction device used in tandem with a mild chemical crystal, dermabrasion helps remove the top layer of skin cells and bring new, more evenly textured skin to the surface. In the process, fine lines and wrinkles seem to disappear.

Sensé™ Original Aroma Is Coming Back

Sensé™ Original Aroma Is Coming Back

Last summer, USANA introduced a new scent for Sensé Gentle Daily Cleanser, Hydrating Toner, Daytime Protective Emulsion, Night Renewal, Perfecting Essence, and Prelude 5. However, many Associates voiced how much they loved the original scent, and we listened! After working closely with the Independent Distributor Council, USANA is bringing back the original, light botanical aroma to these Sensé products.

In the US, the original scent will begin to phase in during the coming weeks ahead and into January 2008*. And this time, it’s here to stay.

USANA Sense' Skin Care Products

Skin is the body's largest organ and it can absorb healthy and unhealthy substances that are applied to it. Sensé™ products focus primarily on the cellular health of the skin and use the newest technologies available to create products that are both effective and safe. All of Sensé's pharmaceutical-grade complexes are thoroughly tested by dermatologists, allergists, and ophthalmologists to ensure quality and safety. An independent, third-party laboratory then tests them again to demonstrate effectiveness. Along with added trace minerals that encourage healthy cells, Sensé products contain powerful ingredients that are clinically proven to nourish, revive, and refine the skin as they help defend against free radicals and oxidative stress. Experience the dramatic difference of exclusive technologies and superior nutrition in every Sensé product.

U.S. PATENTED, SELF-PRESERVING FORMULASSensé has revolutionized the science of skin care with groundbreaking, self-preserving technology. For years, scientists have worked to find an alternative to parabens, the traditional preservative used in beauty and skin-care products. After nearly ten years of research, USANA found the answer in a unique, U.S. patented blend of botanicals, antioxidants, and active ingredients that keep every Sensé product fresh without the need for parabens. It truly is the next generation of skin and body care.

DERMAL SURFACE RENEWAL (DSR™) TECHNOLOGYUSANA's exclusive anti-aging complex, Dermal Surface Renewal (DSR), is now more powerful than ever because it works in two ways--to help reduce the appearance of existing signs of aging and to help prevent the appearance of new lines and wrinkles in the future. This extraordinary, marine-source formulation is free of alpha-hydroxy acids, yet effectively evens skin tone and retextures, refines, brightens, and firms the skin's surface.

The skin contains natural enzymes that break down the extracellular matrix--proteins that keep skin looking youthful--leading to lines and wrinkles. And, these enzymes, or MMPs, become more active as skin ages. DSR contains MMP inhibitors that reduce the activity of these enzymes to help slow the signs of aging. This scientific breakthrough increases cell turnover rate and maintains a firm and elastic intercellular matrix for visible results you will see right away. DSR is found in PERFECTING ESSENCE, NIGHT RENEWAL, SERUM INTENSIVE, and EYE NOURISHER.

REGENISOMES™New Regenisomes supply enzymes that amplify the body's natural process of rejuvenating the skin after sun exposure. Photosomes, fast acting, light-activated enzymes, are found in DAYTIME PROTECTIVE EMULSION, and ultrasomes, the slower acting enzymes that work without light, are found in NIGHT RENEWAL and EYE NOURISHER, Regenisomes help speed cell renewal in sun-damaged skin to revitalize it from within.

PROFLAVANOL-T®A powerful oxidative-defense complex that is rich with vital nutrients, Proflavanol-T provides optimal nutrition for hair and skin cells. Concentrated whole-grape extract, rice-derived gamma oryzanol, and green tea are powerful antioxidants that keep skin and hair strong, while vitamin E and tocopherols soothe and nourish to maintain the integrity of the skin's lipids. This breakthrough, topical-flavonoid complex is your first line of defense for beautiful, healthy hair and skin.

PROTEO-C™The crucial role that vitamin C plays in cell health and collagen synthesis has been known for decades. Proteo-C is a revolutionary formulation of water-soluble and lipid-soluble forms of vitamin C that counteract the harsh effects of the environment on the hair and skin's appearance and provide essential antioxidants. Proline and glycine, highly effective amino acids that draw in moisture, diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Smoother, brighter hair and skin can be yours with this powerful beauty therapy.

Nutrient-poor food, or "junk food" causes obesity

According to a large national survey, nutrient-poor food, or "junk food," contributes nearly 30% of all the energy (calories) consumed in the US population. Efforts to reduce obesity should focus on both individual and policy actions to reduce the importance of nutrient-poor foods in the US diet.

Junk food makes up nearly one-third of calories in American diet A study of 4,700 adults showed that despite the increased popularity of low- carbohydrate diets, almost one-third of Americans' calories are coming from 'empty calorie' foods such as sweets and desserts, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages. Salty snacks and fruit-flavored drinks make up another five percent.

Lead researcher Gladys Block, a professor of epidemiology and public health nutrition at University of California, Berkeley, used data from a U.S. government survey called the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. She analyzed the answers of participants interviewed in 1999 and 2000 who were asked to report all the foods they ate in the previous 24 hours. "We know people are eating a lot of junk food, but to have almost one-third of Americans' calories coming from those categories is a shocker. It's no wonder there's an obesity epidemic in this country," Block said in a statement.

Sodas contributed 7.1 percent of the total calories eaten. Sweets topped the list, followed by hamburgers, pizza, and potato chips. By contrast, fruits and vegetables made up only about 10 percent of calories in the diet. "It's important to emphasize that sweets, desserts, snacks, and alcohol are contributing calories without providing vitamins and minerals," said Block. "

You can actually be obese and still be undernourished with regard to important nutrients. We shouldn't be telling people to eat less - we should be telling people to eat differently."

SoyaMax

For future reference, here is information for your files on SoyaMax.

SoyaMax

24 grams of soy protein per serving
Contains a high-quality soy protein isolate
25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease*

Guaranteed levels of naturally occurring soy isoflavones
SOYAMAX™ AND A HEALTHY HEART*Twenty-five grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. A single serving of SOYAMAX™ supplies 24 grams of soy protein. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in the United States , with a death from CVD occurring every 33 seconds, or more than 2,600 every day. Soy's support of cardiovascular health is thought to come from the relation between soy protein consumption and serum lipid concentrations. Several studies have shown that the consumption of soy protein rather than animal protein better maintains healthy serum concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, provided they are at healthy levels to begin with.*

SOY: THE HEALTHY PROTEINLike animal protein, soy protein provides all the essential amino acids. However, it contains very little fat and no cholesterol. SOYAMAX is formulated with soy protein isolate, which contains small amounts of many essential minerals, as well as other important compounds such as isoflavones. Isoflavones may help maintain optimal bone health by retaining calcium.* SOYAMAX contains a guaranteed level of naturally occurring soy isoflavones. With one of the highest concentrations of soy protein available today, SOYAMAX also has a low fat content. Each serving contains 24 grams of soy protein and only one gram of fat. Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. SOYAMAX is an outstanding source of low-fat, cholesterol-free, non-meat protein, and is easily digestible.

PHYTOCHEMICALSMany of soy's benefits come from its numerous phytochemicals. These compounds include protease inhibitors (which may help maintain a healthy immune system*) and saponins (which demonstrate antioxidant activity*). Other important nutrients in soy are phytosterols, phenolic acids, and lecithin.

We all know that protein builds strong bodies, and it's not difficult to get protein from a normal diet. It's not so easy, however, to obtain high-quality protein that contains the full range of essential amino acids in amounts proportional to the body's needs. 1

SoyaMax is formulated with soy protein isolate, which contains all the essential amino acids and is the most complete vegetable protein source known today. Soy protein isolate also contains small amounts of many essential minerals as well as other important compounds, such as isoflavones. USANA's exclusive PotenSoy" formulation of soy protein in SoyaMax guarantees a full 60 mg of isoflavones per serving.

SoyaMax contains amounts of soy protein that are among the highest concentrations available today, with the lowest fat content. Each serving contains 24 grams of soy protein and only 1 gm of fat. SoyaMax is an outstanding source of low-fat, cholesterol-free, non-meat protein, and it's easily digestible, too.

SOY'S MANY HEALTH BENEFITS
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognizes that twenty-five grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.
Soy protein also has antioxidant effects and has been shown to suppress the oxidation of LDL and cholesterol.3* Soy protein may also help to promote bone health, primarily by lessening calcium loss in the urine.4* Soy protein also provides B vitamins, iron, and other minerals. Health professionals also advocate soy for its value in helping regulate hormones.

PHYTOCHEMICALS
Many of soy's health benefits come from its numerous phytochemicals. These compounds include protease inhibitors, which may protect cells from radiation and environmental pollutants;* phytates, which may enhance the immune system;* and saponins, which demonstrate antioxidant activity.* Other important phytochemicals in soy are phytosterols, phenolic acids, and lecithin.5 THE POTENSOY FORMULATIONMany of the soy products available in the United States have been processed in a way that removes most of the isoflavones, or cannot guarantee their levels. SoyaMax with PotenSoyTM contains a guaranteed minimum of 2.5 mg of isoflavones per gram of soy protein.

SOY PROTEIN ISOLATEThe soy protein in SoyaMax is produced by an isoelectric/water process. This process delivers a high concentration of soy protein and leaves most of the isoflavones intact. The result is an isolate with a protein content of 90 percent and a high level of isoflavones. (my comment: it is my understanding that genistein and diadzein
are derived from soy protein isolate)

INGREDIENTS: POTENSOY (SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, ISOFLAVONE CONCENTRATE), NATURAL VANILLA FLAVOR.

What is the Amino Acid profile of a serving of Soyamax?
Soyamax contains the following amino acids in each serving:
ALANINE 1.0 g
ARGININE 1.8 g
ASPARTIC ACID 2.8 g
CYSTEINE 0.3 g
GLUTAMIC ACID 4.6 g
GLYCINE 1.0 g
HISTIDINE 0.6 g
ISOLEUCINE 1.2 g
LEUCINE 2.0 g
LYSINE 1.5 g
METHIONINE 0.3 g
PHENYLALANINE 1.2 g
PROLINE 1.2 g
SERINE 1.2 g
THREONINE 0.9 g
TRYPTOPHAN 0.3 g
TYROSINE 0.9 g

Growth of USANA

Hi Usana Members

Over the last few days I have been struck by the thoughts of timing in Usana.

As many of you have seen as you log on to the Usana Home Page the company is in the midst of a rapid expansion program. Usana is hiring record numbers of new employees in the USA, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan. the company is also in a huge construction program to house these growing staffs investing millions of dollars into infrastructure.
After 20 some quarters of record growth we are getting name recognition as a respected business entity as well as being the Direct Sales Company with the best products.
Tied in with these notable facts are the timing of the Economy, Baby Boomers approaching retirement, A New Year approaching and your Personal Goals. Let me get a little more specific on some of these.

#1 The Economy, As the Markets shift people are looking for alternative sources of income. Think about Real Estate Agents, Mortgage Brokers, Construction Workers, Building Material Supply Employees Etc.. These people all may be more receptive at this time. Also think about the ripple effect in peripheral industries that may be affected.

#2 Baby Boomers, In 2008 the first Boomers hit 62 years of age. Many of these people are not in the health or financial condition that they may have imagined as being the most desirable at this age. Income replacement, helping children with College or family issues, spending more money as their leisure time increases and many more factors effect this group.

#3 New Year Approaching, Well...If you like the results you got in 2007 and want those to continue then you may not need to take action to instigate changes. If you want 2008 and beyond to look different then this may be the time to set those goals. Your BDS (Business Development System) has some nice guidelines in setting goals.

I know that this message addresses just a few of the advantages and possibilities available at this time but these alone can be a real momentum builder for your businesses. Remember that we are all self-employed as Usana Associates but we are not in this alone.

Rely upon Usana Corporate, Alice Clegg and Jason Kilgore, your downline and all of the great crossline that can all be of great support and encouragement

The JAY That Keeps Giving!

The Gift That Keeps Giving!

Upgrade to 3 Business Centers!

It was a great gift . . .

We all have similar stories! Someone . . . a friend . . . an associate . . . a family member . . . or maybe even a total stranger . . . took a deep breath to get up the courage to approach you with a gift of health and wealth: They asked you to look at the USANA opportunity!

It's the greatest gift we've ever received! It truly is the "The Gift That Keeps on Giving!" That's what Residual Income is! Like the Energizer Bunny it keeps going and going and going! For us, it been sending weekly checks for 10 and 15 years - and it doesn't stop! What a great gift!

Have you ever received a gift you didn't fully appreciate? Maybe you got the little Energizer Bunny but never found the switch that turned it on! Well, the switch is activated by reaching into the center of YOUR heart and GIVING - just like the person that shared it with you!

'tis the Season - for Giving! What a great time of the year for sharing with those we love the gift of Healthy Wealth! It's simple: ALWAYS have a Health and Freedom Newspaper or Success For Home Magazine with you and start giving them away! To everyone you meet. Some will see it as a funny little bunny but others, with your help, will find the switch! You can't control what they do - only what you do!

And now - for a limited time - USANA is offering another gift! If you or anyone in your downline are a 1 BC Associate, you have until December 28th to upgrade to a 3 BC Associate!

Login for the details. What a great way to turn on and leverage the power of your business. It's been several years since USANA has offered this opportunity - don't miss this opportunity to make sure everyone on your team is a 3 BC Associate - it can double your income! This is a limited opportunity - we must act now!

New USANA Associates and customers are popping up all over the globe. With this incredible growth comes the need for additional internal employees to support them. In fact, USANA’s internal employees have outgrown their current office space in several areas, including Australia/New Zealand, Taiwan, Singapore, and the Home Office in Salt Lake City. (see Australia/New Zealand expansion above)
